Reducing Gun Violence - Babies

We are always making progress in the fight against gun crime. Nevertheless every year thousands of mothers lose their babies to gun crimes. Nearly half of these between the ages of 13 to 24 years old are homicide victims. Think about who you will leave behind before you commit a gun crime. They do not just affect you; they also affect the people who love you.

I think that this video is so true. Tons of kids are killed every year from gun violence. Most of the deaths being homicides. I think that it is very sad that kids are being killed, but I mostly feel sorry for the families of those who were killed. Those families have to deal with all of the grief of their child's death. People should really stop to think about how much pain the family has to go through from the death of their child. So remember, "Gun crimes hit home"(ad Council).

Controlling Gun Manufacturers Would Reduce Gun Violence

In the chapter, Controlling Gun Manufacturers Would Reduce Gun Violence by Greider William he thinks we should control gun manufacturers because many people have died from gun accidents. But many companies are being sued for these accidents. So now these companies are making their guns with safety features. Like Colt's Manufacturing Co. which created the smart gun. "A gun that won't shoot if it's being held in the wrong hands" (Greider 180). These safety features however will only reduce gun violence a little, because of homicides.

I completely agree with this chapter. I think that a company should be sued for not having any kind of safety feature, keeping innocent people from getting hurt. But I do not think a person should sue a company, if the gun has a safety feature, because they never used the safety. However, no matter how safe funs become there will always be people killed by them; mostly because of homicides. So there is always going to be gun violence no matter what.

Should Handguns be Banned?

Handguns should be banned

Kevin Fagan argues that handguns should be banned. He talks about his own experience as a reporter. He says that a person if faced with a sudden decision or in a stressful situation might use a gun to solve a problem. He believes that having a handgun will increase the chances of using it. Fagan also believes that banning guns will make people solve problems without using violence.

Timothy Wheeler argues that his hometwon Wilmette, Illinois needs to get rid of their law banning ownership of guns. He believes that banning guns prevents people from defending themselves. A good example for why the law should be lifted is, "homeowner Hale DeMar used his handgun to shoot a burglar" (Wheeler 20), but the homeowner is being prosecuted. Wheeler thinks that decrease in crime is due to longer jail times and stronger prosecutions. He continues to argue that bans on guns are old and are still based on the belief that all gun owners are crazy.

I disagree with Fagan's opinion. I believe that no matter how much stress a person is under; they should never use a gun to solve a problem. However I do agree with Wheeler on the fact that banning guns will prevent people from defending themselves. Just because a person has a firearm it doesn't always mean that they will use it for killing. If a gun is in the right hands, and used properly, it can be very good in a defense situation.

Gun Control Interview

My name is Logan Howze, and on 5/5/10 I interviewed Herb Rosenbaum, a police officer, about gun control. In my interview I asked Herb some questions about gun violence. Herb believes that the gun is not really the problem it's the person holding it. If a person abuses any right someone is always going to get hurt. Herb also says that guns should not be banned. It's a right to all U.S. citizens to own guns, and a matter of teaching people about guns and what they can do.

I really enjoyed my interview with Herb. He was very nice and easy to talk too, which made it even better. I completely agree with everything that he said. During my interview with Herb he brought something to my attention that I never really thought about; the fact of educating people in gun safety. I never really took time to think about teaching people, who do not know, about guns. Doing this might just save some peoples lifes.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

The story begins in the small town, New Hampshire; following the lives of a number of characters on a normal day. Throughout the book, time flashes back and forth between events before and after the shooting at Sterling High School that killed ten people. In the past, it is learned that Peter (the shooter) and Josie (the main character) were once close friends. Peter was always the target of severe bullying at school, and Josie often stuck up for him. The friends slowly drifted apart as they got older. In high school Peter is constantly bullied by Matt (Josie's boyfriend) and his crew; which led to the shooting. Later it is discovered that Josie accidently shot Matt once before Peter made the fatal shot. So both Peter and Josie spend years in prison, and soon after Peter commits suicide.

The reason I chose to read this story is because it is an example of gun violence. It proves that most gun crimes happen with kids or teenagers. Kids are at risk from handgun violence every day, and this story is an example of one. Not all children are at risk of handgun violence, but something should still be done to keep any children from being hurt by handgun violence. It would prevent things like in Nineteen Minutes from ever happening again.

I think that bullying is a very big deal, and it has really has. Especially since recently a girl killed herself as a result of being bullied. It doesn't always end where the person who is being bullied kill themselves. Bullying can also end like Columbine did, where a kid goes crazy like, "Peter's rampage"(Picoult 408). I think that something should be done to keep others from being bullied, so that a school shooting never happens.

Guns & Violence

Most people who are killed yearly by a gun are under the age of twenty. Most of these people are young teenagers and little kids. Some of this is due to the graphic material in the media which does not show the real pain from being shot. It also fails to show the heavy burden left on the families of those who were shot. Many gunshot victims however do not have health insurance so the taxpayers must bear the burden of medical costs.The media focuses on only the negative gun incidents, not the positive ones. The ones where people are killed. Not the ones where a gun saved a persons life. People blame the gun too much. They never blame the person holding the gun. Instead of taking away peoples guns we need to take away the crazy people behind them. Also gun violence is exaggerated in America. There are other countries with higher death counts from guns than America.

I do think that guns are a problem. Mostly with kids twenty years and younger. The reason for this I think is there are, "too many guns, too easy for a wacko kid to grab and go bonkers"(Kim 22). I can't stand the fact that because of people being hurt in gun violence the taxpayers are having to pay more just because most of the people being shot have no health insurance. I do not think that it is right for us to have to pay more. We could help stop this if we could limit the sale of firearms.

15yr old boy loses his life because of gun violence

Kadeem Blackwood, a 15yr old boy who went by the name of Snipez was killed by gun violence. He most likely died because of where he lived, in Derby, a place where teenage gangs organize. One of Kadeems cousins said, "He was a boy that wouldn't cause any trouble, but would stand up for himself". He was shot in the chest most likely over territory between teenage gangs. The violence of the teenage gangs has escilated.

This story about a young boy dying shows us just what can happen when guns are in the wrong hands. These teenage gangs are probably the number one cause of death of kids from guns. This is a good example of how private owning of a firearm can lead to more violence. Though this is not true in every case, it holds true in most of the gun violence among kids and teenagers. This is one reason that I think they should have limits on who should or shouldn't have a firearm. Just so that those with a bad history of violence cannot get their hands on a gun, preventing things like what happened to Kadeem Blackwood.

Private Ownership of Handguns Does It Lower or Raise Gun Violence

Two cities, both with equal populations, crime rates, and economies. They are Seattle and Vancouver, but there is one thing that they dont have in common and that is their murder rates by handguns. In Seattle the death rates are twice that of Vancouvers. The reason for this is because in Seattle guns are available to anyone. On the other hand in Vancouver, "guns are tightly restricted and difficult to obtain"(Safran 17). Claire Safran also talks about the stories of children being killed by handguns leaving the families to grieve.
Daniel Polsby talks about how people who do not have access to a firearm are easy targets for people who do. People who have firearms take advantage of those who do not. He tells us that if most citizens are armed there will be more peace within society because criminals a wary of attacking someonne who might have a gun. So, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have them"(Polsby 31).

I think that the differences between the two cities, Seattle and Vancouver, should be taken into consideration. It shows us just how much harm firearms can bring to those around us. On the other hand though I do think that people with a history of a good record should be allowed to own a firearm. They can be very useful if you are attacked.

Guns, A Good/Bad Mean of Self-Defense?

Joel Rosenberg, a husband and father, was sleeping one night when suddenly wakened by his wifes shouting. He saw a man standing in their bedroom so he immediately ripped open his drawer and pulled out his 9mm Ruger P-85. The burglar took off in a hurry, and the family was safe. Later they found out there was more than one burglar in their house that night when they noticed that their large TV set was gone. Rosenberg says, "I still wonder what would have happened if I had not had a gun that night" (Rosenberg 103). One night Barbara L. Keller was at home, just her and her kids, it was about 1a.m. when she got a call from her husband saying "that his plane was grounded in Dallas by bad weather"(Keller 105). A minute later the doorbell rang and she heard glass shatter. She immediately grabs her daughter in a panic and runs to their neighbors to call the police remembering that she left her three boys upstairs asleep. She waits for the police fearing the worst, luckily her boys slept through it and were not hurt. After the incedent Keller still didn't think it was safer having a gun, because she believes that it just provokes more violence.

I think that people who have a license and have gone through a gun safety class should be allowed to have a small firearm. They are a very good self-defense in a situation like Rosenbergs. People are always saying that they are unsafe and just provoke a violent situation even more. That is why they made safety locks and safes for guns. The only reason some people are hurt by them is because some people have absolutely no common sense and just put their guns in drawers. Guns can provoke a situation, but if you are in your house and in harms way its better to have one, because it could possibly save your life.
